Soil Moisture

  • If the soil is moist, don’t water! A screwdriver is a great way to test soil moisture; if the screwdriver goes easily into the ground, don’t water. Consider getting a soil moisture sensor that works with your smart irrigation controller.
  • Water your landscape using the cycle and soak method by reducing the number of minutes on your timer and using multiple start times spaced one hour apart. This allows the water to soak into the soil and avoids runoff.
  • Consider installing an automatic rain shutoff device on your sprinkler system.
  • Install drip irrigation systems for trees, shrubs and flowers.
  • Turn back your automatic timers in the spring and fall and water according to the Weekly Lawn Watering Guide.
